Our work
The Amarna Project (British Mission to Tell el-Amarna) has been undertaking fieldwork at Amarna since 1977, under the auspices of the Egypt Exploration Society from 1977–2006, and from 2007 onwards through the McDonald Institute of Archaeological Research of the University of Cambridge.
We carry out our work at Amarna through an annual permit from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Our funds come from research grants and from donations gathered by the Amarna Trust (UK) and the Amarna Research Foundation (USA). We maintain an office and excavation archive in Downtown Cairo and an expedition house at Amarna.
You can find regular updates on our research on this website, via our Facebook page and in annual preliminary reports in the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology.
The Amarna Project relies on a diverse team of researchers, and technical and support staff, including from the towns of El-Till and El-Hagg Qandil at Amarna. More information on those currently involved in work on site can be found in our annual JEA reports. The current director of the Project is Anna Stevens.
